SECOM

History

Origin of the
SECOM brand
and
company name

1962

Foundation of the original
company, Nihon Keibi Hosho

SECOM Co., Ltd. was established in July 1962 as Japan’s first security company. When it was founded, the company’s name was “Nihon Keibi Hosho”. Initially, the company offered manned security services such as patrolling services and static guard services.
The name “Nihon Keibi Hosho” is derived from this company being Japan’s (“Nihon”) first security (“keibi”) company with the added “hosho”, meaning “secure” and conveying the connotation of “compensate”. The now commonly used term “keibi hosho” was coined at that time.
While Nihon Keibi Hosho being in charge of the security of the athletes’ village at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics catalyzed the company’s breakthrough, the hit of 1965 television drama “The Guardman”, inspired by the company, instantly increased its name recognition overnight. In 1966, the company developed Japan’s first on-line security system. While increasing its locations nationwide, the company worked on expanding their services to corporations.

1973

Establishing
the SECOM brand

In February of 1973, as on-line security systems started to proliferate, the new SECOM brand was launched. Afterwards, the company was often referred to as “SECOM”, although it retained the name “Nihon Keibi Hosho”.
The SECOM name was coined as a contraction of “security” and “communication”, and the concept of this new brand was to build “a new security system collaborating people and science”. Utilizing a network infrastructure built by expanding on-line security systems, SECOM continued to create innovative security services.

1983

Company name changed
to SECOM

During the decade after new brand was launched, the company worked hard to expand its operations. The company kept Nihon Keibi Hosho as its company name, while "SECOM" was used as its brand name. In 1975, computers were introduced into the online security system to develop the world’s first computerized security system (CSS). Afterwards, in 1981, the company launched Japan’s first residential online security system to venture into the home consumer market. In December of 1983, after ten years of using the brand name as its company name, the company changed its name to SECOM Co., Ltd. Just as we had entered the advanced information society, SECOM, under the new company name, introduced and began to realize the creation of the Social System Industry—its vision to comprehensively provide systems and services for security, convenience, and comfort, based on a network of security systems.
